A walk in the Woods

We went for a nature walk today.  There was just a little snow left on the ground.  The weather was very overcast.  We saw lots of interesting things.  Mushrooms, animal homes, and leftovers where they had been eating.  Nathanael went with us today and brought home a couple pieces of wood to use on his new lathe.

  1. Your woods are wonderful to explore in! You captured some great images of interesting things...love the animal hole with leftover lunch near-by. The dusting of snow left makes it look so cold! Thanks for sharing your wintery walk with the OHC.

  6. A burl is a tree growth in which the grain has grown in a deformed manner. It is commonly found in the form of a rounded outgrowth on a tree trunk or branch. Thanks for asking, Shirley! Now we may have to do a study of burls as we have many on our property. :D

  7. Hi, Robin! Your maple burl is spectacular! They are valuable to artisans who make them into bowls like the Naive Americans did. We own a cherry burl bowl and I just love it. Your family did a great job of keeping their eyes open in the woods. And people think there's nothing in the woods just because it's quiet!

    1. Thanks Mother Robin! We have lots of cherry burls as well. Our son makes rustic log furniture and is just starting to experiment with the burls.
